How to Take Control of Dreams

There are many things that one can do before turning in for the night and one thing that is important to learn is how to take control of dreams and one of the easy ways to help induce a pleasant dream at night is to keep a small notebook at your bedside table.

Each night before going to bed, jot down an example or ideas of what you would like to dream about that night. Sound strange? Not really! By jotting down these thoughts onto paper will help your brain internalize these thoughts and place them in your subconscious mind.

Once you are relaxed and in bed let you mind reflect on what you have just written down. This will ready your subconscious mind into thinking about these thoughts as you drift into slumber. Whether you play music that relates to your thoughts or dreams as you relax in your bed, these signals are transmitted to your brain and help your mind thought take control of your dreams.

Of course, environment also does play an active role in determining what type of dream you might have when you go to bed. Watching a scary movie just before bedtime might just play havoc on your thoughts of having a good night’s rest.

Scary movies before bedtime tend to have us tossing and turning all night, so do remember to schedule these types of movies when you don’t have to wake up so early in the morning, just in case you have some sort of nightmare resulting from a movie from the night before.

Other ways that one can take control of dreams is to try to have a relaxation time just before bed. Whether this be a nice soak in the tub or a couple of pages or a chapter out of a book, reading before bedtime helps your mind to wind down from a long day of working.

By reading before bedtime, you are also giving your brain the chance to unwind and get rid of some of the stress and tension that it might have had to endure during the day.

How to Translate Your Dreams

Dreams are sequence images, sounds and feelings experienced while sleeping, particularly strongly associated with rapid eye movement sleep. Reveal the meanings behind your nightmares. A nightmare causes a strong unpleasant emotional response from the sleeper, typically fear or horror, being in situations of extreme danger, or the sensations of pain, falling, drowning or death. Such dreams can be related to physical causes such as a high fever, turned faced down on a pillow during sleep (most often in the case of drowning nightmares), or psychological ones such as psychological trauma or stress in the sleeper’s life, or can have no apparent cause.


Most important step is when you wake up in the morning, don’t move from the position you woke up in. That’s the position you were dreaming in. You will disconnect your memory from the dream.

Don’t think about what you have to do today. Quiet your mind, and let the dream come back to you. You have 90 seconds before that dream fades away.
Whatever you remember, even if all you remember is a tiny piece, write it down. This all happens in the same part of our brain where short-term memory is stored and if you don’t write it down it will be gone after breakfast.


1. One-third of our lives is spent sleeping.

2. In an average lifetime, you would have spent a total of about six years of it dreaming. That is more than 2,100 days spent in a different realm!

3. Nightmares have been here as long as mankind. Back in the Roman Era, striking and significant dreams were submitted to the Senate for analysis and interpretation.

4. Everybody dreams. EVERYBODY! Simply because you do not remember does not mean that you do not dream.

5. Dreams are indispensable. A lack of dream activity can mean protein deficiency or a personality disorder.

6. We dream on average of one or two hours every night. And we often even have 4-7 dreams in one night.

7. Blind people do dream. Whether visual images will appear in their dream depends on whether they where blind at birth or became blind later in life. But vision is not the only sense that constitutes a dream. Sounds, tactility, and smell become hypersensitive for the blind and their dreams are based on these senses.

8. Five minutes after the end of the dream, half the content is forgotten. After ten minutes, 90% is lost.

9. The word dream stems from the Middle English word, dreme which means “joy” and “music”.

10. Men tend to dream more about other men, while women dream equally about men and women.

11. Studies have shown that our brain waves are more active when we are dreaming than when we are awake.

12. Dreamers who are awakened right after REM sleep, are able to recall their dreams more vividly than those who slept through the night until morning.

13. Physiologically speaking, researchers found that during dreaming REM sleep, males experience erections and females experience increased vaginal blood flow – no matter what the content of the dream. In fact, “wet dreams” may not necessarily coincide with overtly sexual dream content.

14. People who are giving up smoking have longer and more intense dreams.

15. Toddlers do not dream about themselves. They do not appear in their own dreams until the age of 3 or 4.

16. If you are snoring, then you cannot be dreaming.

17. Nightmares are common in children, typically beginning at around age 3 and occurring up to age 7-8.

18. In a poll, 67% of Americans have experienced Deja Vu in their dreams, occurring more often in females than males.

19. Around 3% of adults suffer from sleep apnea. This treatable condition leads to unexplained tiredness and inefficiency.

Dreams are successions of image, ideas, emotional and sensations occurring involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. Dream is a sleeping person’s mind. Let us find out what research shows about the reasons that we dream, and read about theories of dream interpretation.

The human brain is a mysterious little ball of gray matter. Scientists have been performing sleep and dream studies for decades now, and we still aren’t 100 percent sure about the function of sleep. It’s also pretty commonly accepted among the scientific community that we all dream, though the frequency in which dreams are remembered varies from person to person.

Another theory is that dreams typically reflect our emotions. During the day, our brains are working hard to make connections to achieve certain functions. When posed with a tough math problem, your brain is incredibly focused on that one thing.

While scientists still do not know much about why or how we dream, some have suggested that we typically spend more than two hours dreaming each night. Many people experience their most vivid dreams during REM sleep, less vivid dreams occur at other times of the night.

In fact, everyone could dream every day. In the night, we may think some things, then, going to bed, we often dream it. It means that we think it, it will come true in the night. So, when we go to bed, we do not thing some things. It can influence our good sleep. While this theory suggests that dreams are the result of internally generated signals, Hobson does not believe that dreams are meaningless.

Another theory uses a computer metaphor to account for dreams. According to this theory, dreams serve to ‘clean up’ clutter from the mind, much like clean-up operations in a computer, refreshing the mind to prepare for the next day. One theory suggests that dreams are the result of our brains trying to interpret external stimuli during sleep.

Until someone proves or disproves one of these theories, or poses an alternate one, we are left at square one. Our knowledge as to what causes us to dream is limited to the fact that we do dream, and that dreams occur during the REM phase of sleep.

What is the Connection Between Dreaming and Play?

For small children the difference between dreams and real life is often unclear. They wake up from a dream of a favorite dessert and wonder where it is. Sometimes, if a dream was fun for them, they want to act it out. Experiencing the difference between dreams and reality is part of the vital importance of play in child development.

Children need free playtime to develop properly. Over-supervision, too much supervised “play” imposed by adults, inhibits their imagination and keeps them from acting out their dreams in the natural way that children do without adult interference.

Children need good playgrounds, places to run and scream and grow and act out fantasies from their dreams. Safe playgrounds provide a place to fall safely as well as to run freely. And safe playgrounds reassure adults enough for them to allow children to play freely.

Playground structures are important, too. They become the supports for acting out dreams. The top of a slide becomes a mountain top. A jungle gym becomes a castle, or a rainforest, or whatever a child makes of it.

Today playgrounds are safer than they were a couple of generations ago. The structures are safer. But are they more fun? That depends a lot on the freedom allowed to children for play.

One thing that helps reassure parents of playground safety is resilient playground surfaces to fall on, surfaces that repel water and keep the ground below swings, slides, and other structures from turning into slippery, dirty mud holes.

‘Rubber mulch’ such as that offered by RubberRecycle can be used to create a dryer playground surfacing and a safer place to fall. It is being used more and more on school and commercial playgrounds. So children can run and jump and build their imaginary worlds without interference from overprotective adults.

So parents can relax and simply let children be children. And children are once more free to run and play and climb and act out their dreams.

Sleep apnea is a condition that causes people to stop breathing while they are asleep. Even if you are overweight, you may look fine in your dreams. Dreams generally show us as we perceive ourselves. So if being overweight is not part of your body image, you may never have an anxiety dream about overweight.

Others, however, have dealt with the issue of overweight all their lives. Children can be cruel, and dreams of “teasing” and ridicule can haunt people all their lives.

Special public occasions become occasions for nervousness, even dread, for many of us because of a fear of not looking good enough, of not fitting in. Weddings, reunions, the first day of the school year (especially at a new school), or even the prospect of vacation, swimming or going to the beach can cause anxiety and even nightmares for some people.
