Lucid Dreams – What Is It?

A lucid dream is a dream in which you are aware that you are dreaming. These dreams can even be controlled. Do they exist or is it something you imagine? Can it be trained?

Some people find out that they are dreaming while they are dreaming, and they are able to control the way their dream develops. You could say that they are composing their dream while dreaming it.

These are lucid dreams. It can happen to anyone, at any time, but some people tend to have more lucid dreams than others.

There has been many scientific studies about lucid dreaming, for example Stephen LaBerge from Stanford University and Brigitte Holzinger from Vienna’s dream institute. They have recorded the brain activity while people were dreaming normal dreams and compared with lucid dreams.

They found out that in a lucid dream, all brain-frequencies between 13 and 19 Hz were stronger while other frequencies were dimmer. These frequencies are called Beta-1 rhythm (sometimes called Sigma) and are active when you are awake and are concentrating to find a solution at a mathematic problem.

Obviously, the areas of the brain that are activated while undergoing a lucid dream are the areas that would be activated under normal circumstances. If the subject dreams he sings or counts to 100, the parts of the brain that are normally activated when you sing or count are the ones that are activated while having the lucid dream about it.

In short, you could say that the body sleeps but that the brain is awake. The most fitting description would be virtual reality. The person who has a lucid dream can do almost everything like in a virtual reality world, just more exciting because your brain has a better graphical configuration than the best video card on the market.

Some people can even train themselves at night while having lucid dreams. The American psychiatrist, Paul Tholey, has, for example, trained snow-board exclusively while he was sleeping. When he finally stood for real on a snowboard, he obtained quite good results.

Many professionals are training their sport while visualising different actions. If it is real for your brain, it is real enough. Of course, you still have to train your muscles to do the actions, but your movements will be more precise. They are already trained.

This is possible thanks to a special ability: You will remember lucid dreams better than ordinary dreams. While a dream may be clear in your mind when you wake up, it will generally fade away during the day and most of the time, you will forget it rather quickly. Lucid dreams stay clear because the things you are doing in a lucid dream use the same neural pattern as if you did this thing for real. Therefore, there will be memories of it, like you have memories of things you have done.

You can train yourself up to having lucid dreams, but it is not easy. Some people do it naturally, some don’t, some can train themselves quickly, others have problems. There are no way of telling beforehand.
