Phantom Doorbell and Telephone Dreams | BYB

April 13, 2008 on 9:34 pm | In Dream Types | 79 Comments

For years now, if I oversleep, I am often awakened by the sound of a doorbell ringing—but no one is at the door. This has happened over and over when there is no one outside, and no one has been anywhere near the door.

Generally it does not sound exactly like my real-life doorbell. It is a dream. And it is a useful one. The message is “Get up! Get busy!”

Over the years the sound has sometimes been a phantom telephone ring. The principle seems to be the same.

Are you ever awakened by a phantom doorbell? Or a phantom telephone ring? Does this happen when you oversleep, to help keep you from being even later?

I think the phantom doorbell is a very useful type of dream, and a real blessing. How about you?

  1. I have heard of people with inner alarm clocks, but you are the first who has an inner door bell.

Stopping by for BYBS. Have a great week.

  2. I had similar the other day. I heard the doorbell ring then a woman come into my house calling my name. It wasn’t a voice I recognized. I know it was a dream because my lodger was in the next room and when I asked if someone had just rung the bell she said no. It made me get out of bed and check though. I was having an afternoon nap which I don’t usually do.

  3. I found your blog by looking up dreams and doorbells. I occcasionally have the experience of being woken from sleep to the sound of a “phantom doorbell”. It was not from oversleeping – but was in the first hour of sleep. It left me with my heart pounding. I’m not sure why it happens, but it does happen to me! ;-) Thanks for sharing your experience!

  4. I often hear the phone ring in a dream. I also have a recurring one involving a telephone. I am trying to phone someone and I cannot dial the number, I try different phones and still I cannot get through. Does anyone know what it may mean?

  5. OMG, Im so glad that Im not the only one! The sound of my doorbell awakens me over and over again…sometimes once a week! It’s driving me nuts! I sprint out of bed from a deep sleep only to find no one at the door. My husband had the same thing happen just last week! We started to think that someone was ding-dong-ditching us! But I know it’s not that. It’s funny how my body instinctively gets up instead of waiting for the second ring. Hmmmm..What does this all mean?

    Comment by Char — August 17, 2008 #

  6. Yes! My theory is that it is our subconscious mind’s way of getting us up. And it works! Sometimes, though, it seems out of kilter–when there is no particular reason or need to get up.

So it may be some other kind of subconscious wake-up call. All the more reason to pay attention to your dreams, I think. If you are trying to tell yourself (or remind yourself of) something important, it’s probably a good idea to listen.

Thanks, everyone, for all these great comments. (Yay, it’s not just me!)

  8. I’ve been woken up by the “phantom door bell” for years. From reading your posts it sounds like some strange kind of phenomena. I’ve wondered if there’s some kind of medical explanation for it. I have to admit that the paranormal has crossed my mind also. I’m glad I’m not the only one. I find it not only perplexing but annoying. Thanks for sharing.

  9. This is really creepy. But I’m sure glad you folks are creeped out also. The thing with my doorbell ringing is that I normally have people complain that they ring the doorbell to many times before I finally answer it. That is because it is hard to hear from my bedroom. However, that strange phantom doorbell was extremely loud and long and I had to go look around the house when I found no one at the door. It was so clear and distinct that I was impressed with it, thinking I would have no more problems with it not being loud enough for me to hear from the bedroom, however, my real door bell is still with a faint sound. When I mentioned this to a friend she laughed, told her husband that I was having the phantom doorbell and suggested I look at this site. She had heard one to and her mom told her that some people at her church were having the same thing going on. I’m still shocked that there is a phantom doorbell blog. What gives????

  10. The actual topic of this blog is dreams and visions. It’s about working with dreams. However, the phantom doorbell was waking me up a lot, and I wanted to know if other people hear it, too, so I blogged about it. I’m very grateful that so many people chimed in (so to speak ) with comments. I guess it struck a chord (hah!) because it has drawn by far the most comments of any post I’ve made on this or my other blogs. Thank you all so much for your comments!

  11. O.K. Since I posted, I tried an experiment. I muffled my doorbell with cloths so that it could not ring. Well, I have to tell you, I STILL heard it the other morning. I got up to check if the cloths had fallen free allowing the doorbell to ring – no that didn’t happen. I went and tried to ring my doorbell – NOTHING!! Just like intended – it did not ring. Thank you all for your postings or I would think I’m really going nuts!

  12. Well I have to say I’m a bit relieved that others go through this as well. I’ve been woken up (with a pounding heart) to the sound of a “Phantom” doorbell for years. No Pattern that I can figure out. Sometimes when I nap, sometimes in the middle of the night, sometimes early in the morning. And more frustrating…it doesn’t happen all the time! As a matter of fact I think it’s been over a year since it’s happened.

Well any who, Glad to know I’m not the only one.

    Thanks!!

  13. I am so glad that I have found this page and read all the comments.

I understand exactly what you all mean as I also get it usually in the early hours of the morning although lately it was late evenings too.

I think it often happens if I’m expecting a parcel and worrying about being in bed when the mailman comes.

When I was young I used to hear the alarm clock, get up have breakfast go downstairs, out the front door to catch the bus then wake up and do the whole thing again – sometimes lots of times. I was told it was stress due to an event that had happened around the time it all started.

Phantom noises -The worst time ever was early this year when unknown to me, some birds were nesting in my walls. After the trauma (phobia with birds) of finding fledgelings in my house for over 2 weeks, I kept imagining i could hear birds all the time, nearly drove me nuts. Actually, I still think I can hear them at times.

So what with birds, doorbells and occasionally the imaginary phone, it’s can be a bit stressful.

Of course, if you look at paranormal sites, they will insist that doorbells indicate you have visiting ghosts that want to communicate with you.
    Who knows?

  14. I too hear a doorbell ringing during my sleep which awakens me….last night it happened several times. Once or twice I’ve been awakened to hammering..exactly 6 hammer sounds!
I only hear the doorbell sounds maybe once every month until last night and became concerned due to the multiple times it awakened me. Coincedentally, (or maybe not), I’ve developed a constant ringing in my ears (tinnitis), especially on the right. I’ve been to a ENT physician, and everything about my hearing seems normal. I’ve learned to cope with the tinnitis as I found that many have it and you just have to learn to deal with it. As of last night, I became concerned that possibly something was wrong with my brain or cranial nerves due to the multiple phantom door bell sounds that disturbed my sleep……blogged for more information and found this site! Wow, was I surprised to learn that others hear this phantom doorbell! It did reassure me to know that others are experiencing this too!

  15. I have never had this happen to me until last night (really early this AM). It woke me up and sounded similar to my own doorbell (“rang” just once) but I knew it wasn’t “real” because none of my dogs barked. I just fell back to sleep and then I “heard” it ring twice in succession. It weirded me out… Glad I found this site. I’m not alone! : )

  16. Thank yo ufor this site. For the past 2 weeks, I have been having the phantom door bell wake me out of my sleep in the middle of the night. It is CRYSTAL clear and so loud that I jump out of bed. I go look out of my front window to see if there is anyone or a car there — nothing, nada. Since it happened again last night, I figured I better get on the Internet and try to learn what this means. I’ve visited some dream related sites that say that a door bell can men new opportunities or your inner man trying to get your attention. I just want the phatom door bell to stop ringing. I have never had any problems sleeping before and now I’m finding that after I awake from the door bell, when I lay back down to go to sleep, I’m not resting as well as I normally would. **Glad I found this site because I was starting to think I was about to go crazy (LOL). We’ve all been taught that only craxy people hear noises (LOL). Maybe we are just a chosen, special type of people

  18. Same here. I hate when it happens when my husband is out of town! But often I wake him up, and ask him to please check the door because I just heard the doorbell! He usually has not heard anything, or can’t remember although I heard it so clearly. It happens sometimes during the day as well. What the heck?? We’ve lived in 3 different states since it started – so I doubt it’s the neighbors or ding-dong-ditch.

  20. OMG! While in conversation with my best friend tonight, the topic of dream interpretations came up. I mentioned that for about 7-8 years now I have periodically been startled out of sleep by “the door bell”. The sound is as real as if I were wide awake. I thought I was just not being open minded, therefore not able to interpet the meaning. Relief is upon me now that I know I am not alone in such a confusing experience.

  21. I am so glad I found this blog! Last night I heard the phantom doorbell twice during a night of restless sleep. It really freaked me out, because we actually had an incident at our home last winter where someone actually DID ring our doorbell in the middle of the night on a weeknight and being safety-conscious, we did not open the door, but called the police. And I learned later it wasn’t any of my neighbors. So now I am a little paranoid about waking up to hear a doorbell ringing in the middle of the night. But last night, my husband just lay sleeping soundly next to me both times I heard it ring (one chime, just like my normal doorbell), so I thought I was losing my mind! I am so glad to know that others are experiencing this, too. I don’t need to wake up at a certain time, so it’s not like it was telling me to get up, so I will try to understand it as a “wake-up call” of some other sort!

  22. Thank you so much for all your comments! It is great to hear from you all.

I found some more information on phantom doorbell dreams and blogged about it here: http://www.dreamvisions.info/d.....ntom-bells

If the link doesn’t work, just type “doorbell” (without quotes) in the search box (upper right corner of this page) and you will be shown a page with links to both doorbell posts.

    Thanks again.

  23. I found this site after having another “phantom doorbell.” I am feeling a bit under the weather and was sleeping in late on my day off. I told myself I could rest but really needed to be up and writing by 11. A few minutes after 11, BING-BONG! I went to the door, nobody there. It was jarring, woke me out of sleep. This has happened to me before. Usually it’s when I need to be up doing something. Sometimes it’s when I’ve overslept and am going to be late. Subconscious mind or whatever, I’m thankful for it!

  24. Glad I found this site. I was about to buy another door bell thinking there was something wrong with ours. I did find it odd that it happened the apt I lived in and also the new house I moved into.
Thanks. This site has helped me.

  25. So relieved to have found this site. Right after my mother died in 1995 I would hear the doorbell ring just one ring on several different occasions during the early morning.I have gone to the door and no one was there. I thought it was children playing a prank. I heard a lady on several talk shows claim to be able to make contact with the dead and she claims that if you hear bells of any kind it means that some one you loved very much who is deceased is trying to contact you. My father died last year and now once in a while I hear the phone by my bed ring one time. It scares me to death. My husband never hears it. It does not happen often, but enough to bother me. By the way, since he died there is no more doorbell ringing, just the phone. I am an only child and we were all very close. I wish I knew if they were trying to warn me or to tell me they were fine. I have never told anyone about this.

  26. Add me to the list.

I just moved to new construction and the doorbell has never yet worked, nothing has ever rang when it was pressed.

Yet, on two different nights, both Saturdays when there was no work in the morning to arise to, I have heard around 4 am a doorbell ring so loudly that it woke me. Both times the doorbell rang twice, the first ring rousing me from deep sleep, the second, waking me completely. I have had fitful rest after that both times, never being able to get back to sleep.

I’m hoping to actually discover some deeper significance in this besides a reminder to go to work, when that’s not the case for me.

    Comment by L — March 15, 2009 #

  27. I had to add this when I found it in the Dream Dictionary:

To dream you hear or ring a door bell, foretells unexpected tidings, or a hasty summons to business, or the bedtide of a sick relative.
Also astrologically, I have a hard aspect between Saturn and natal Chiron which serves as a “wake up call.” Right now that aspect is exact. Could absolutely be my own psyche.
The Saturn-Chiron aspect would affect many people possibly similarly as well, particularly those right now in their 40s.

  28. I’m glad I ran across this. Not pleased others are plagued by this too, but it is reassuring that I’m not crazy ;)
In the last several months I’ve often had bad sleep from waking far too early in the morning from this phantom doorbell. This is *not* a good thing, or ‘opportunity knocking’ or an internal clock reminding me it’s time to get up- this is cutting into much needed sleep.
I wake panicing about the door, nothing is there. I put foam on one side of my doorbell chime, so it would only “ding” not “ding dong”. This helped for a little more than a week (this doorbell can wake me nearly every other day) until my dream started to adjust and began giving me the phantom doorbell with the new 1-tone “ding” of the changed doorbell sound.
I just wish I could make it stop

  29. I just had my first doorbell dream this past weekend. Went on a “girl’s weekend” to my friend’s newly built vacation home in Michigan-a beautiful 3 story home on the lake. I woke up at 3:30 AM to the sound of the doorbell ringing. With my heart pounding, I waiting to here if my friend was going to answer it – but nothing. Then I had a silly thought – what if someone was trying to break in. I didn’t even know where I was, so if I called 911 all I could say is I am in a yellow house in Michigan. After about a half hour of panic, I finally fell back asleep. When I woke the next morning, I asked my friends if they heard the doorbell ring in the middle of the night. They both said no, and then my friend who owns the house went to look outside the front door. She came back in and laughed, “I don’t have a doorbell!” Crazy!!

  30. I have, for years, been awakened by the phantom doorbell in the middle of the night. I usually wake, listen for a second ring and when it doesn’t come, I just go back to sleep, expecting that I just dreamed it. Recently, I’ve been recording while I’m asleep. I snore like an angry bear and don’t get restful sleep, so I’m trying to determine if I may be stopping breathing during the night. While I was listening to the playback, I heard the doorbell ring…it didn’t even wake me. So, it does ring…I caught it on tape; why, I don’t know.

  32. This just happened to me, but I was awake at my computer & the doorbell rang 3 times in a row. No one out there or even near.
I believe hearing phantom phones, buzzers, doorbells or alarm clocks is a sign from God to “Wake Up” = go talk to Him or pray for whoever He tells us to pray for. When these things happen, it means you are receiving a message in the spirit. We all have spiritual God-given gifts, it’s up to us to hone the gifts we’re given or not. Cheers & blessings to you all!

  33. I too have heard the door bell ring while I am asleep. I wake up with my heart pounding and can’t go back to sleep it happens in the middle of the night and now recently in the early morning. My sister said that patients at her neurology office are coming in hearing door bells in the night too. Could there be a medical condition causing it?

    Comment by Jennifer Brice — August 7, 2009 #

  34. I get the feeling that this phenomenon is happening more and more often to more and more people because we are collectively getting some kind of spiritual wake-up call. Not everyone hears the call, and those of us who do, often do not know how to interpret it. But more and more of us *are* hearing it. Maybe gradually we will start to understand the message, whatever it may be. Maybe we should all take a look at the state of the world today and see how we can help.

    Comment by White Cranes — August 8, 2009 #

  35. I went looking for these phenomena after a discussion yesterday. My mother has a persecution complex that a neighbour rings ‘once’ in the night and that this has continued since she moved appartment to another town. I myself have the doorbell variant, only a few times a year, middle of the night and not quite the right tone (muted). I asked a colleague who is a neurobiologist and he said “I get the telephone version, one ring and then nothing – I never realised other people heard this kind of thing”. It’s probably very widespread but we don’t like telling people about it.

    Comment by Geoff — August 15, 2009 #

  36. A few years ago is when it all started. A lot of the time, I am barely awake when I hear the doorbell, but it’s loud and clear. I thought after a while kids were pulling pranks on me and running away. I am a music teacher and have a great sense of pitch, so I would even ring it again to see if the pitch was the same. Sure enough it would be. Once it woke me up every hour on the hour from 5:00am on. I would gun it straight to the door and look outside. I was starting to think I was nuts. Then I started college and had to wake up early every day, so this phantom doorbell went away for a couple years. I came to my own conclusion that my stresses and worries about not waking up on time for work or not hearing the alarm clock was the reason for this doorbell nonsense. Although, I have recently moved to a different country to live with my boyfriend…well…2 weeks ago. I am not teaching or working yet. This morning after my boyfriend left to work I heard the doorbell and was very close to getting out of bed to answer it. Then I realized that we don’t have a doorbell. A couple minutes later I was barely awake and I heard my boyfriend say a couple words to me loud and clear. Scared the crap out of me, but I can’t remember what they were. I know it was him because of the New Zealand accent, but obviously nobody was there. Am I going crazy??

  37. I have read all of these and my problem is I heard a loud riging of a bell twice last night in the room behind me while I was a wake. I was standing in my son’s room and my husband had just stepped out on the front porch to let dogs out. Everything was off in the living room behind me and I heard it twice, two short rings. I asked my son what was that, he had no clue what I was talking about. Then I asked my husband if his cell phone had a ring lke that. He said no. We dont own a bell. So this is the only site I found so far. Thanks for letting me freak out here.

  38. I had this dream for a second time this year last night. I can’t remember what I was dreaming about the first time I had this dream and I vaguely remember what I was dreaming about last night when I heard the doorbell. The doorbell sounds like a tone or a chime you know sort of a ding, dong, and more like the doorbells of today. Just like the first time I heard it I did pretty much the same thing most of you did and that was to check out my windows to see if someone was there, there as no one and I’m pretty sure no one did a ding and ditch. After reading through all of the posts here I personally believe it could be a few things base on my dreams and the things I’ve read here and on other sites. 1. A wake up call to an opportunity, 2. A spiritual wake up call, 3. A wake up call to a medical condition(I’m 41). I also like the idea that maybe were all being tapped on the shoulder for something special, something that we need to do. Does anyone else have additional ideas to share? Respectfully – Richard

It was right after he died I heard that very annoying and scarey bell almost every night. I even had a friend come over to look at the doorbell who is an electrician. Anyway I belonged to a grief group at the time and ask if anyone else heard this bell inthere sleep almost half the room heard it. I am very convinced it has something to do with a loved one dieing.

  42. Emily, thank you for your comment. I wish we could help, but we do not know what causes the phantom doorbell phenomenon. Most of us are just relieved to find out that others experience it, too. That is what we have been discussing here. You may want to read all the other comments and see if that helps you form an opinion as to what causes it. Then please share your ideas about it with us.

  43. hello everyone,
i am writing to confirm that i too hear the doorbell sounds, and am awakened to find no one at the door. When i was younger it used to be my telephone but now it is my doorbell. it usually happens first thing in the morning. I was awakened last night about 4 am to the sound of a door bell i was wondering if it was the sound of my elevator but i rang the door bell and it was that same distinctive sound. I am usually awakened that time of morning when my boyfriend is home because that is the time he leaves to go to work but this always happens when he is away. sometimes i also wake up to him talking to me but he is only in my dream and not in real person when i awake. i dream sometimes that i am talking to my best freind on the phone but that is usually after we havent talked for along time. i am not sure why this happens i call the front desk to ask if they had allowed anyone upstairs without permission and they tell me that no one was there either. I dont know what this is but it may be spiritual i think maybe god is trying to tell me something or maybe i just need to get up and do my homework that was due the night before.
    what do you think.

  44. Ditto to most of the experiences above. I have heard it couple of times over past few months, last week being the latest. Had an Angel reading day or so later and the lady asked me if i had heard doorbell ringing in my sleep? Yikes!! Said i should pay great attention to my dreams as i was being sent a message. She suggested meditation, a good way of aiding mind clarity and freeing it up to understand the message in the dream.

  46. What does it mean though??
I have this doorbell dream at least once a month, sometimes
more. I hear the doorbell ring, it immediatly wakes me, I used to run downstairs as I thought it must be serious for someone to come to my door in the middle of the night, I would run down and of course no one there! I’ve also had it on holiday so I know no one is ringing bell for fun as there was no doorbell there.
It does worry me to have the same dream over and over, I hate it. I hate the way it makes me wake up with a fright, it’s just not right to have a dream over and over!

  48. I too hear the phantom doorbell, and sometimes just a single bell with a single ding. My thought is that it’s a reminder that we are never alone, that we are surrounded by angels. Also maybe passed oneslike possibly my grandmother that passed away in this house before i bought it from family. I feel this is a reminder that we are loved. It makes me smile and feel peaceful. This isn’t something I share alot, I don’t want to be dragged away to the looney bin. lol But I am glad it happens.

  49. I am also part of the phantom door bell club (Las Vegas Chapter). I wonder if people hear the door bell they are used to hearing? Meaning since some of the bloggers on here are from the U.K. maybe you are used to a different bell sound then the one I am hearing in the U.S? Maybe we are part of some chosen group as others have claimed?? I know for years I have also seen 11:11 constantly??? Glad to know I am not going crazy.

  51. Add another person to the group. I was woke up again this morning by our doorbell that hadn’t rung but this time it was much more clear and I actually jumped out of bed and threw on some pants and low and behold no one was there. I have usually fallen for the phantom doorbell before and chalked it up to just a dream but this morning was different. I went online and typed it into google and found this site. Glad I am not going crazy. I live in the United States in the state of Oregon. To see so many people with the same issue makes me feel better. I to have seen 11:11 in my dreams and since reading this I am starting to agree that we may all have something in common. I have not always been a perfect person but thought I made peace with God but maybe there is something more. What is 11:11

  53. At least once per month, I am awaken by the sound of a doorbell. I know it’s a dream because my dog will start barking and run for the door if it were real… Also, I have a security light that would come on should someone approach the door… It has never been on when I’ve checked after being awaken from sleep by this doorbell dream. But, when it happens, it is usually 2 to 4 hours after I go to bed. I’ve gotten to the point that I just stay in bed if the dog doesn’t budge…
On rare occasion, I’ve also been awaken by phantom phone calls, but nothing on my caller ID…

  54. OH man am I glad to see so many people with the same issue.
I was getting really worried. I have had this about 10 times now, hearing a door bell while I was sleeping but not my doorbell exactly.I even hear knocking at the door sometimes.
Not sure what this all means but am less worried now.
    Thanks for sharing

  55. Thank God I’m not the only one!!! I was woken by the doorbell at 3am this morning, I got up, went to the door and nobody was there, was really freaked out. Have neighbours from hell who damaged my car last year on purpose and I was afraid it was them. Was in the middle of a really horrible dream (about the neighbours from hell) and I now I think it was my subconscious getting me to wake up. Took ages for me to get back to sleep as my heart was pounding. To everybody who this has happened to before on several occasions do you notice that it happens more when you are stressed out about something?

  56. I’ve been hearing door bells ringing off and on for the last month or so. Once I completely woke up and realized it wasn’t really a bell, but just a dream. This morning though I heard the bell and it was so clear it woke me completely up right away. It was also 2 a.m. and there was no way I was going to answer the door.

It snowed yesterday and last night and when I opened the door this morning there were no prints.

This is annoying but I really do believe my subconscious is trying to tell me to “wake up”. I just wish I knew what I was supposed to wake up to!

  57. I’m glad to read everyone’s story because I have thought I’ve been losing it! It started 2yrs ago. I wake to the doorbell, sometimes it rings once. ..ding dong, and sometimes it’s a frantic ringing like 10 times fast. Also, I hear knocking at the door 3 times. I feel like it’s a warning because I’m always startled. I think its my guides trying to warn me. Does anyone know what this all means? It happens once a week or more.

  58. Sorry to comment a second time…but is anyone hearing the outside (front or back) door of their house close at night? It’s just started for me I hear an outside door close but I kind of know its not my door. It’s been happening when I am in REM sleep and wakes me up to a pounding heart.

  59. Hi, Doug. All comments relating to phantom dreams are welcome here—the more the better.

I, too, hear other sounds, not just doorbells. In particular I used to hear telephones ringing.

When you live in an apartment, as I do, it is hard to tell about knocking sounds or doors opening and closing, because they may come from the neighbors.

I suspect that we hear more phantom sounds than we realize, but we do not always recognize them, because we explain away whatever we can.

This is a great conversation! Thanks everyone for all the wonderful comments. I’m looking forward to more.

  60. Hi, count me in. I’m happy to find something on this. It started with me two mornings ago when I woke up way before the alarm. The funny thing is that it is the doorbell sound that we have at work and it’s a bit lengthy…so I knew it wasn’t my home doorbell. I wasn’t dreaming but wide awake and I’ve been hearing it constantly for two full days. Sounds like it is in the distance. Funny when I was at work yesterday and someone really did ring the doorbell. So I got the distant sound in my mind and then the real one which was louder. It goes away sometimes when I’m with other people but always returns. Yikes!

  61. Another one for this group. I was being woken up by the doorbell ringing when I didn’t even have one. Now I do have one, but the sound that wakes me is not the same as the real one. Also telephone bell wakes me – again, not the same as my real phone sound. I also get an alarm clock ringing, which is also not like the real one. There seems to be no pattern to when I hear these sounds, but I am interested in the stress theory as my life has been exceptionally stressful for the last 8 months and the bells have only been happening during that time.

  62. I’ve heard a doorbell (in my head!) while asleep
since moving to the house I am now in.
twice Ive gone downstairs to see no one there.
it’s always at odd hours.(4am, midnight, 2am,3am… a time most people wouldnt be awake)
    was getting really creeped out.
now i have to wait and think about the sound and if I really heard it or if it was the one i hear in my head!

  63. I used to hear door bells at all hours in the months leading up to my husbands death…never before that. My husband died unexpectedly from a stroke. Since then no more doorbells. Do you think it was some kind of warning?

    Comment by BK — April 10, 2010 #

  64. I first started hearing doorbells while I was asleep over 6 years ago for no special reason. Then again when my husband left for Iraq 5 years ago they increased dramatically. I also started having horrible migraines at the same time. I would wake up and run to the door with my heart pounding but no one would be there. I realized the doorbell was not the sound of our bell but an older type bell. We have moved many times since then and still get the doorbell phantom. I decided to look today for any new info on this strange thing and found this page. I have a ROCKING migraine today and last night I heard the doorbell twice but did not get up because it was not “our” bell. I have done sleep tests and was diagnosed with insomnia. I do think the bell has to do with stress and fatigue. I also agree that it is a type of reminder. I seem to hear the doorbell when I have a lot on my mind. My mother suffers from migraines but does not hear a bell but rather loud music, in her head, just before a migraine attack. There is such a thing referred to as head explosion where you are awakened by loud banging, thuds, roaring etc,. type sounds that are “in your head” and no one else hears. I don’t know how if the doorbell is tied in with my headaches yet. Unless it has to do with being in between awake and asleep which is how insomnia kinda works, you never actual enter REM sleep. Thanks for having a blog to vent on it certainly helps not being the only one.

I am not always sleeping when I hear phantom doorbell. It happens a lot lately. Usually I can tell the difference between the phantom and the real doorbell more easily when fully awake. Anyone else?

I have been wide awake when I’ve heard it also. And always in my bedroom. My house is pretty small and it is as loud as if the bell is actually in the room with me. I’ve not been lying down each time I’ve heard it either. Guess what…What is strange is my normal doorbell cannot be heard when I’m in my bedroom. But, I still go to all of the doors and look for someone to be there. Not sure how I know it is phantom or why I insist on looking around the house anyway.

  69. Before I make my comments, I want to qualify a few things. I am probably one of the most overly analytical people you could ever meet. I can usually find a logical explanation for the most bizarre occurrences/phenomenons. I have literally been in the middle of a dream that seemed impossible or illogical, and rationalized (in the dream) that things were senseless, then told myself (in the dream) to wake up because I was dreaming. That being said…. this “phantom doorbell” event has occurred often enough – without explanation – that I decided to do a search about it this morning. I was really surprised and relieved to see that I’m not the only person experiencing this problem. As with others, the chime startles me to full alert, and on some occasions it’s actually a door knock. I’ve gotten up immediately to check all the doors which all have auto lights (with motion detectors) on them. The lights are not actuated, and there is never anyone at the door. Additionally, I travel often during the week and have heard the doorbell while in my hotel room, which by the way has no doorbell. Now….I will admit that I am very a light and alert sleeper, and sometimes take a sleep aid at night. But I’ve experienced this with and without the sleep aid. I’m also an early riser (6AM or earlier) by nature, but the disturbances usually occur between 1AM and 3AM. Is it possible that this some sort pressure from an inner ear infection (which I’ve had in the past) or congestion from a cold or allergies? Or, I’m going out on a limb here, is it a warning or premonition for future events. I’ve participated in a sleep study in the past, and was cleared as not having a problem with sleep apnea. I know this may sound contradictory to my opening statement, but I am a very spiritual person (I believe in Jesus Christ) and have experienced visions through dreams in the past. Thanks for your comments.

  70. I too am a Christian (Pentecostal)but do not assume that there is a connection to Christianity and these sounds we are hearing. The few times I’ve heard the phantom doorbell it was a definite Ding Dong. LOL. However, in the past few months a couple of times I’ve had a Beep that was in a triplet. It sounds like the old pagers! My cell phone has no sound like that nor any other device in the house that I know of. Again, as when I’ve heard the doorbell it was loud and it was in my bedroom. Of course I get up and look around for a stop watch, clock, or any other alarm it may be but find nothing. This is extremely strange. No one goes to my room but me, so there is not much chance that someone has left a pager in my room that I’m unaware of. No event after the fact seems to connect to these sounds. Anyone have an opinion regarding a beeper sound being a progression to another dimension of this phenomena or a regression!… LOL I think I’ve matured in my spiritual life a lot this past year and find it hard to believe that if God was trying to contact us he would use such a suttle experience as bells. Doesn’t he use burning bushes and handwriting coming out of thin air? Ok I’m being silly. What is your opinion, which carries more urgency a doorbell or a pager? Just an inquiring mind wanting to know! Shelia

  71. I came across this website as i googled ‘hearing my door chap while sleeping’. I dont have a door bell so my letter box it there to chap. For the second time at early hours of the morning(4am) i jumped out of bed with my heart pounding, looked out my bedroom window, to my door to find noone there. It was so loud and exactly as my door would sound. I was curious to find what this meant. I have came across that it means its our spirtual inner self giving us a message of our inner self feelings and to act and believe what we are telling ourselfs inside. I have been having some problems with fellow friends, which have left me thinking strongley of the human being, their motives, personalities and why people say what they say to people which can hurt them. I believe this has happened to me to tell me to listen to my inner voice and believe in myself and be the stronger better person! Does anyone else have a similar story to mine?

  73. Jennifer (and everyone), dream interpretation is not a science. It is an art. There is no one interpretation of anything that will apply to everyone, because dreams are a way that our own subconscious uses to communicate with us, using the images and experiences we all have stored in our memories. The subconscious tends to communicate in images (symbols) rather than words. It may also use sounds, smells, and feelings. As a brain researcher might put it, dreams are more of a right-brained experience, dealing in patterns and images rather than words.

Since each of us has different memories and stored images, the same image can mean different things to different people—at different times.

Unfortunately lots of people assume that every symbol or image means the same to everyone in all times and places. So there are lots of silly books and websites that give “dream dictionaries” or left-brained theories. That is, they are based on logic and theories rather than explaining that the meaning of dreams depends on the person who has the dream. Unfortunately some people try to be authorities by telling everyone the same meaning for their dream images, and that just does not work.

I recommend reading books like “Creative Dreaming” and any of the dream books by Robert Moss to learn how to interpret your own dreams and help others learn to interpret theirs. Only you can say for sure what any dream means to you, and sometimes it takes some work to allow yourself to understand that.

    I hope this helps.

  74. OMG….I posted a comment on this blog on May 22nd about my experience with the phantom doorbell. After my post, I did some additional searches on the web, and generally speaking there are two paths of thought on the subject. One, being the more common spiritual aspect, and the second being a more superstitious explanation. On one of the more “creative” websites, multiple bloggers posted that “the dream book” predicts that money is coming your way. Oddly enough, five days after posting my comments I received noticed that I will receive a “significant” (unexpected) deposit on June 15th. Coincidence?….most likely, but interestingly bizarre nonetheless. Hope it works out the same way for the rest of you guys – LOL.

    Comment by Shannon — June 25, 2010 #

  76. I’ve had the both the “doorbell” (most common) and the “telephone” (less common, sounds just like our real modern phone). Today was the most recent time hearing the doorbell around 8 a.m. In fact I cannot remember hearing it at night. Most often I hear it during the morning.

My first impression (scientific) is that what most of us share in common is what is sometimes called an “aural” orientation. For instance, many may be able to play or sing music by ear and have a good sense of pitch and remember quite easily things we’ve heard rather like they were being re-played on a tape recorder or similar.

If indeed the “doorbell” is a dream, then we are likely replaying something we know by sound (our primary orientation). Note, it doesn’t have to be the phone or doorbell we actually have; it can be any phone or doorbell we’ve ever heard, since the subconcious saves many things we’ve never dreamt we’d be able to remember.

  77. 4:30 this morning I found myself jumping out of bed and running to my front door looking out the peep hole. I heard a loud and clear, “dink-donk” (like an old push bell) – “heard it”/felt it (felt a slight push) in the location of my third eye. Funny thing is, I don’t have a door bell! I live in an apartment building and friends call my cell for me to let them in. Cell phone was off. I’m so happy to have found this posting. Has been on my mind all day and I can still hear and feel the sound clearly.

I am under a lot of stress…my dad passed away last year…having financial problems…in poor health myself. Anyone have any ideas? I hope I’m like one person who received money. :)
